Guillermo López

Dr. Guillermo López Vivanco is the Head of the Medical Oncology Service at the Cruces University Hospital in Bizkaia and the leader of the Medical Oncology group at the Biocruces Bizkaia Health Research Institute until April 29, 2022. He was also Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Nursing at the University of the Basque Country / Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea, UPV / EHU until November 2020.

Dr. López Vivanco completed his Bachelor's degree in 1978 and specialized in Hematology (1981) and Medical Oncology (1985) at the Cruces University Hospital. He obtained his PhD from the Faculty of Medicine and Nursing of the University of the Basque Country / Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea, UPV / EHU, in 1991.

He began his professional experience in 1985 as a specialist physician at the Cruces University Hospital and later at the Virgen del Camino and Provincial Hospitals of Navarra. Between 1991 and 1995 he served as Deputy Medical Director of the Cruces University Hospital and then as Head of the Medical Oncology Section until 1999. During 1999-2001 he was appointed Deputy Minister of Health Planning and Management of the Basque Government and since 2002 he has been the Head of the Medical Oncology Service.

It should be noted that in his career as a Researcher he has developed numerous projects related to various types of cancer (lung, melanoma, colorectal, breast and pancreas). He has participated (most of them as principal investigator) in more than 25 competitive research projects funded by public entities, both at the regional level (Health and Industry Departments of the Basque Government), at the national level (Instituto Salud Carlos III) and at the international level (European Framework Programmes VI and VII)

In addition to his participation in translational research projects, he has directed and participated in more than 130 clinical trials approved by the Clinical Trials Committee of the Cruces University Hospital and by the Spanish Medicines Agency. These are phase II and III trials in colon and rectal cancer, lung, breast, stomach, kidney, head and neck, sarcomas and supportive treatment.
He is the author of more than a hundred national and international scientific publications as well as book chapters and clinical guides and is an external evaluator of publications and research projects.

He is a member of several national and international Oncology societies.
