Carlos Goicoechea Martínez
Carlos Goicoechea holds a degree in Biological Sciences from San Pablo-CEU University and the Complutense University of Madrid, and a PhD in Pharmacology from the Complutense University of Madrid. He is currently Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC), Full Professor of Pharmacology, and Coordinator of the Multidisciplinary Pain Research and Treatment Group, i+DoL.
He began his academic career in 1990, joining the Department of Pharmacology at the Faculty of Medicine of the Complutense University of Madrid, where he completed his undergraduate dissertation and defended his doctoral thesis in 1994. In 1997, he joined Rey Juan Carlos University. Accredited as a Full Professor in 2013, he was appointed to the position in 2017 and has also served as Director of the Department of Health Sciences.
His research focuses on the study of drugs with analgesic potential, in close collaboration with the Institute of Medical Chemistry of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the research group led by Dr Goya and Dr Jagerovic, with whom he is part of a CSIC–URJC Associated Unit. He also conducts research into the pathophysiology of pain through the design and development of new animal models of chronic pain.
He is the co-author of 85 scientific publications, 55 of which have appeared in international journals indexed in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR). His research activity also includes 123 contributions to national conferences, 79 of them as an invited speaker, and 113 contributions to international conferences, including 22 as an invited speaker.
He is the co-inventor of two patents and has supervised 18 doctoral theses. His research work has received 12 awards, two of them international.
He has participated in 32 research projects funded by government ministries, the Regional Government of Madrid, the European Union and various universities, serving as principal investigator in eight of them. In these projects, he has been responsible for research into analgesic drugs and the development of new animal models of chronic pain.
Following a positive evaluation by ANECA, he coordinates the URJC–Banco Santander Research Excellence Group, “Multidisciplinary Pain Research and Treatment Group”, which brings together researchers from URJC and CSIC in disciplines including Anatomy, Histology, Pharmacology, Psychology, Physiotherapy and Medical Chemistry. He also coordinates Pharmakom, a high-performance research group at Rey Juan Carlos University.
He is the editor of five books and manuals and the author of 34 book chapters. He is also extensively involved in scientific peer review for the Spanish National Agency for Evaluation and Foresight (ANEP), the Carlos III Health Institute and several international journals, including Anaesthesia & Analgesia, European Journal of Pharmacology, Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior, Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology, Neuroscience Letters and Pain. He has also served as Associate Editor of the Journal of the Spanish Pain Society and as Vice-President of the Spanish Pain Society.
