Belén Sanz Barbero

I have a PhD in Pharmacy (Complutense University of Madrid, 1995), a Master's Degree in International Public Health (ISCIII, 1999) and a Specialist in Gender and Public Health (ISCIII, 2014). In 1997 I joined the ISCIII as a postdoctoral fellow. Currently, since 2023, I belong to the scale of Scientific Researchers of Public Research Organizations assigned to the National School of Health, ISCIII, where I carry out research and teaching activities. I belong to the Biomedical Research Center in Epidemiology and Public Health Network (CIBERESP) and I am part of the UNED-ENS Joint Institute (IMIENS) where I am the principal investigator of the Social Inequalities in Health group.

My research career is framed in Social Epidemiology. Currently, my research is focused on the characterization of individual and structural factors of intimate partner violence against women and sexual violence, as well as on the analysis of the social and health response to these forms of violence. Aware of social inequalities and their impact on health and well-being, my work focuses on populations socially vulnerable to gender violence and sexual violence, specifically young women and immigrant women, among others.

In recent years, I have directed different national projects and have participated in international projects, including the Cost Action “Femicide Across Europe” and the “Lights, camera and action against dating violence” project funded by the DAPHNE program. I am currently directing the project “Characterization of the use of pornography and its association with sexual-affective health and sexual violence: evidence for consensus on interventions with young people in Spain.
Since 2019, I have been part of the ISCIII Equality Working Group. Among the activities that I have developed in this Working Group, is the preparation of the “II Equality Plan of the Carlos III Health Institute 2022-2026”.

I have also provided support and advice to the General State Administration through collaborations maintained with the Government Delegation against Gender Violence (Ministry of Equality) with the Comprehensive Surveillance Program of Gender Violence (Ministry of the Interior) and the Women's Health Observatory (Ministry of Health, Consumption and Social Welfare).

I have trained at the Institute of Public Administrations in “Equal Opportunities” and in “Management Skills with a Gender Approach”. At the ISCIII I have trained in “Equality Plans”, as well as in “Sexual Harassment and Harassment on the Basis of Sex”.
My research activity is recorded in 82 publications published in the Web of Science, which accumulate a total of 900 citations. https://www.webofscience.com/wos/author/record/260420
