Ana Peiro

Ana Peiro

Doctor of Medicine, specialist in Clinical Pharmacology (2002), she is a Full Professor (2019) at the Miguel Hernández University (UMH), where she has taught as an associate since 2003, in subjects related to Pharmacology in Medicine, Pharmacy and Podiatry. In addition, she has a degree in "Social and Cultural Anthropology", a Diploma and Master's degree in "Research Methodology: Design and Statistics in Health Sciences" (UAB) and a master's degree in "Bioethics" (EVES). She has participated as a teacher in doctoral and postgraduate programs, uninterruptedly since 2022 (UMH). Her CV highlights the continuity of her research on interindividual variability in pharmacological response, which since her stay at UCSD (US, 2006) has focused on the polymedicated population with chronic pain and functional diversity, being an attending physician in the Pain Unit since 2012. In these pathologies, she investigates pharmacogenetic markers and sex/gender interaction as explanatory variables of said variability. With this dual objective, she received a grant for Independent Clinical Research Projects (ISCII, 2020) with the title "Gender biases in pain medicine: from omics to health care". She coordinates the “Platform for Applied Pharmacogenetics for Research” (ISABIAL Foundation), the “Recommendation in Pharmacogenetics” Working Group of the Spanish Society of Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacognomics (SEFF) and the multidisciplinary research group “Neuropharmacology applied to Pain and Functional Diversity” from the ISABIAL Foundation. Previously, she has participated as a collaborator or principal in more than 90 research projects / clinical trials (40 with competitive grants, 24 independent sponsors and 30 from the industry), directed 6 doctoral theses (plus 6 in progress) and nearly 30 final master's / degree projects. She is an active scientific communicator, with nearly 200 posters/communications at scientific conferences and in more than 70 events in various social forums (Pint of Science, Women and Girls in Science Day, European Night of Science, TEDxValencia: women's lounge, among others) individually and collectively, as a member of the group of scientific communicators "BigVanCiencia" and "Scientists and Artists" (FISABIO Foundation). Her work has earned her several awards (Outstanding UMH Teacher 2004, Fundación Hospital Optimista 2017, Royal National Academy of Pharmacy 2017, Famelab-FECYT scientific monologues 2017, Extraordinary Pain Award, Grünenthal Foundation 2018, Awards for the best Doctoral Theses in the field of pain from the Spanish Pain Society 2018, 2019, and Hestia Award for care for functional diversity 2020, Best Research Project Award, SEFF 2022).
