Carmen Borrell i Thio
Graduate in Medicine and Surgery. Doctor of Medicine from the University of Barcelona. Specialist in Preventive Medicine and Public Health. Specialist in Family and Community Medicine and Diploma in Health at the National School of Health since 1982. Associate Professor – Pompeu Fabra University since 2005 and Associate Professor at John’s Hopkins University since 2005, currently holds the position of manager at the Public Health Agency of Barcelona. Her main line of research is the study of the social determinants of health. She has led or collaborated in more than 40 research projects supported by national and European Union institutions. She has 394 publications in journals indexed in PubMed.
Among her most relevant actions are:
a) Having directed the Commission to Reduce Health Inequalities in Spain, from 2008 to 2010. http://www.mspsi.es/profesionales/saludPublica/prevPromocion/promocion/desigualdadSalud/EquidadSaludyDSS.htm.
b) Directing a research group at the CIBER of Epidemiology and Public Health, another at the Sant Pau Biomedical Research Institute. Recently her group has been re-accredited by the Agency for University and Research Aid of Catalonia.
c) Having directed 37 doctoral theses and master's thesis.
d) Director of the Gaceta Sanitaria magazine 2010-2016.
e) Participation in the Coordinating Committee of the Master of Public Health of the Pompeu Fabra University - Autonomous University of Barcelona from 2000-2015. - Steering Committee of the Diploma in Public Health of Catalonia (IDEC, UPF) since 2014. - Steering Committee of the CIBER of Epidemiology and Public Health, 2006-2010. - Scientific Committee of the Jordi Gol Foundation, 1995-2018. - Steering Committee of the Sant Pau Research Institute since 2009.
In her career she has been awarded several prizes, including: a) Extraordinary Doctorate Award, for the preparation of the doctoral thesis: Borrell C. Evolution of social inequalities in Barcelona, 1983-1992 (1995); b) Narcís Monturiol Medal for scientific and technological merit in Catalonia. Generalitat of Catalonia, 2004; c) Josep Trueta Medal for Health Merit, Generalitat de Catalunya, 2016.
